Interesting. I lost out in the same way recently, so read the forum and found this post.

I thought I would try a test bid through the US servers for a UK item, detailed in the second link posted by Cupid.

It worked, Buyer Protection Fee removed, but... UK VAT was added.

As it was a very low value item, I'm not bothered, although in my case, I was able to reduce the postage again by choosing Click and Collect!

Hilarious...

I should have added this was a UK account bidding on a UK item, with UK delivery address.

Did you also pay for it via the US site ?

I only ever pay via the UK one.

Via the UK site - as soon as the auction was won, the Buyer Protection premium vanished, and the postage cost went up. I could see that VAT had been added to the whole total.

The US site price was the same, where VAT was explicitly called out.

Might try it out again to see if the behaviour is the same.

Certainly interesting.

The postage price to the same UK address for a UK auction should be the same on the US site as the UK one, there's no justification for a higher one. The seller will not be expecting to get a higher postage amount for sending an item to exactly the same place from exactly the same place, because it was purchased via a different portal, so where would that extra 'postage' amount be going ?

Also, for a private seller in the UK, they will not be VAT registered, so sending to a UK address no VAT is due. I wonder where Ebay think they are sending VAT that has not been collected legally ?

Well well... I did try this again, with an auction ending just now.

Result: as originally expected, no Buyer Protection Fee but postage remained the same.

Interestingly, VAT was called our for the postage, but the total value was as advertised in the listing.

No idea what happened yesterday.

If that's their 'Simple Delivery' program, I guess that's Ebay (not the seller) charging you for the postage and as a large VAT registered UK company they do have to include VAT in their prices, for services. The total shipping price you will be charged has to be provided consistently throughout the process though, as per UK legislation.
