Are you sure that it does not say 'Bid Under Asking Price'?

The bid increment at that auction price is 2 GBP, see:

http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/buy/bid-increments.html

so your bid would have needed to be at least 63.01 GBP to have been accepted by eBay.

Just checked in the database, it indeed says "bid under asking price".

When he bid 61.01 the auction price was 59.01 (that is his previous bid of 58.01 plus one increment of 1), so he had to bid 60.01 or more (that is the current auction price plus one increment of 1). He chose to bid 61.01 instead, which raised the price to 61.01 since his bid was less than 1 increment above yours.

At that stage the increment is increased to 2 since the auction price is now over 60.01, so the next bid must be 63.01 or more. He chose to enter another bid which must have been at least that.

So the minimum that you could possibly have bid to win this auction was 63.02 (that is 0.01 above what he must have already bid). You could have lost the auction but had your bid registered if you had bid 63.01.

So at the end of the day they were prepared to pay more than you. If 62.08 was not the maxiumum that you were prepared to pay then you should have entered a higher amount in gixen.
